Accessories Make the Man, 2012.
The items and experiences we choose to spend our money, time, and effort on vary between individuals, races, gender, socio-economic class, and culture. For many of the lower middle class white males I have come to know from rural Pennsylvania, this is bow hunting. The experience of sitting in a tree stand waiting for the perfect big buck to come along brings joy to otherwise mundane working class lives.
In “Accessories Make the Man” I transformed a foam archery target and a pair of camouflage hunting overalls into garish trophies. Though I have great admiration for this classic display of the ‘American Man’, I could not help but humorously comment on the underlying objectification of women and animals that it has embraced.
This project was completed with the support of Swarovski Crystal. Upon a visit to Swarovski I was given the prompt to interpret Swarovski’s mission statement “we add sparkle to people’s everyday lives” using products from the Swarovski Elements and Swarovski Gemstones collections. The material was generously donated by Swarovski.
The deer is now in the collection of Swarovski Optik North America located in Cranston, Rhode Island
